One of the most common questions we get from customers is: “Can I convert my current bike into an e-bike?”
Some riders are curious about doing it themselves, while others want us to take care of it for them. So, what’s the answer? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.
Short answer: yes, you can.
Converting your existing bicycle into an electric bike is possible with the help of a conversion kit. These kits usually include a motor, battery, controller, and display, and they can be installed on a wide range of bikes, depending on the frame and wheel specifications.
But whether conversion is the right option depends on a few key factors:
- Condition of your current bike: Older or worn-out bikes may not be strong enough to handle the added weight and power of an electric system.
- Frame type and brake system: Some frames (especially lightweight ones) and older brake setups may not be compatible or safe for conversion.
- Drivetrain condition: Your chain and cassette of gears might need to be replaced or upgraded to handle the increased torque from the motor when you’re going with a mid-drive (motor installed on the pedals) conversion kit.
- How you plan to use it: If you’re commuting daily, tackling hills, or carrying loads, you’ll need a reliable, powerful setup your current bike might not support.
We recommend bringing your bike to our Sydney shop or sending us a few photos and specs. We’ll assess whether your bike is suitable for conversion and talk you through the best options based on your needs and budget.
It’s also worth considering that while conversions can be a great DIY project and a way to reuse your current frame, a purpose-built e-bike is often more reliable, better integrated, and potentially more cost-effective in the long run.
Purpose-built models are engineered from the ground up to handle the power and torque of an electric motor, offering better safety, balance, and ride quality.
