Bafang Mid-Drive Problems — and How to Fix Them

Bafang mid-drive motor common problems and fixes — Cyberbikes workshop

The most common Bafang BBS mid-drive problems are a stripped nylon primary gear, badly timed gear shifts that chew the drivetrain, faulty brake cut-off sensors and heat build-up on long climbs — and every one of them is fixable. Our workshop walkthrough on exactly this became Cyberbikes’ most-watched video, clocking up around 97,000 views, so we’ve turned it into a practical guide you can keep.

The video Sydney riders keep sharing

Bafang’s BBS01, BBS02 and BBSHD mid-drives are brilliant, affordable motors — which is why they power so many conversions. But they share a handful of predictable weak points. Here’s the workshop breakdown that resonated with tens of thousands of riders:

1. The nylon primary gear

Inside every Bafang BBS is a nylon primary reduction gear. It’s designed to be the sacrificial part — cheaper to strip than the motor — so if you dump full power at low cadence or take a lot of hard hill starts, it can wear or shear. Treat it as a consumable: keep a spare, replace it when you hear the tell-tale grinding, and it’s a quick workshop job rather than a dead motor.

2. Shift timing and the drivetrain

A mid-drive puts its power through your chain and cassette, so shifting under full motor load is the fastest way to bend a chainring tooth or snap a chain. The fix is a gear-shift sensor that briefly cuts motor power the instant you change gear — cheap insurance that saves the whole drivetrain. Soft-pedal your shifts and the whole system lasts far longer.

3. Sensors, brakes and heat

Two more usual suspects: the brake motor-cutoff sensors (if the motor doesn’t cut when you brake, check or replace them) and heat on long, slow climbs, where a mid-drive can get hot if you grind up in too high a gear. Keep your cadence up, drop to an easier gear, and let the motor breathe. For everything else — bearings, controllers, connectors — see our complete e-bike maintenance and repair guide.

Get it sorted by people who do this daily

Cyberbikes is Australia’s Bafang mid-drive specialist. If your BBS is grinding, throwing errors or losing power, our Leichhardt workshop can diagnose and fix it — or if you’d rather a purpose-built, low-maintenance ride, the Cyberbikes Centauro runs a sealed rear hub with far fewer wear parts.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Bafang mid-drive make a grinding noise?

The most common cause is a worn or stripped nylon primary gear. It’s a designed wear part and can be replaced without replacing the whole motor.

Do I need a gear-shift sensor on a Bafang mid-drive?

It’s strongly recommended. A shift sensor briefly cuts motor power when you change gear, preventing chain and gear damage that comes from shifting under full load.

Why does my Bafang motor overheat on hills?

Climbing slowly in too high a gear forces high torque at low speed, which builds heat. Shift to an easier gear to keep cadence up and reduce the load on the motor.
