What makes an e-bike road-legal in NSW?
An e-bike is legal in NSW when the motor delivers a maximum of 500 watts (dropping to 250W with EN 15194 certification from 1 March 2029) continuous power and the motor assistance cuts out at 25 km/h, after which you pedal under your own steam. From March 2026, NSW aligned with the European EN 15194 standard used across the rest of Australia, and the old 500W allowance was scrapped. A throttle is only permitted for a low-speed “walk assist” up to 6 km/h.
