To maintain an electric bike, you really only need to keep five things in good order: a clean, lubed chain; correctly inflated tyres; properly adjusted brakes; a well-cared-for battery; and tight bolts. Most of it takes about 10 minutes a week at home, plus a professional service every six months. An e-bike isn’t fragile — it just has a motor, battery and electronics worth looking after, and a little routine care keeps it running smoothly for years.
The 5-minute weekly e-bike check
The single most useful habit is a quick weekly once-over. Wipe the frame with a damp cloth, then run through these basics:
- Chain: wipe it clean and add a few drops of bike-specific lube. A dry, grinding chain wears the gears and drains your range.
- Tyres: check the pressure against the number printed on the sidewall (most e-bike tyres want roughly 40–65 psi). Correct pressure means fewer flats and more kilometres per charge.
- Brakes: squeeze each lever — it should feel firm, not spongy. If the pads are squealing or the lever pulls to the bar, get them looked at.
- Bolts: give the handlebar, seat post and wheel nuts a quick check so nothing works loose.
How to look after your e-bike battery
The battery is the most expensive part of any e-bike, so treat it kindly. For daily riding, topping up to around 80–90% is gentler than always charging to 100%, and a full charge before a long ride is fine. Never store the battery completely flat — if you’re parking the bike for a few weeks, leave it at roughly half charge. Keep it somewhere cool (ideally 10–20°C) and out of direct Sydney summer sun, never baking in a hot car. Always use the charger that came with the bike. Looked after this way, a quality battery typically lasts 500–1,000 charge cycles, or around three to five years.
When to book an e-bike service in Sydney
Home care covers the basics, but book a professional service roughly every six months or every 1,500–2,000 km. A proper service checks the motor and wiring, brake pads, gear tuning and any firmware updates — things best left to a trained mechanic. At Cyberbikes in Leichhardt we service every brand we sell, including the Centauro e-bike, and we’ll happily check over a bike you bought elsewhere too. If something feels off mid-ride — a new noise, weaker assist, or a soft brake — don’t wait, as small issues are cheap to fix early. For trusted e-bike repair Sydney riders rely on, we’re five minutes from the Inner West.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I service my electric bike?
Book a professional service every six months or every 1,500–2,000 km, whichever comes first. Between services, do a quick weekly check of the chain, tyres, brakes and bolts at home.
Can I wash my e-bike with a hose?
Yes, but use a gentle trickle or a damp cloth — never a high-pressure washer. High-pressure water can force its way past seals into the motor, battery contacts and bearings. Wipe down, then dry the chain and re-lube it.
How long does an e-bike battery last?
A quality e-bike battery lasts around 500–1,000 charge cycles, or roughly three to five years of regular riding. Charging gently, avoiding extreme heat and not storing it flat all help it last longer.
