How Do You Maintain an Electric Bike? A Simple Guide for Sydney Riders

Here’s the good news: keeping an electric bike in top shape isn’t complicated, and it doesn’t take a workshop full of tools. An e-bike is still a bicycle — it just has a motor and a battery along for the ride. Spend a few minutes on it each week and it’ll reward you with years of smooth, reliable kilometres around Sydney. Here’s exactly how to maintain an electric bike, the easy way.

The weekly five-minute check

Most e-bike maintenance comes down to a quick routine. Before a big ride, run through the “ABC” check that every Cyberbikes rider learns: Air, Brakes, Chain.

Air: Pump your tyres to the pressure printed on the sidewall. E-bikes are heavier and faster than regular bikes, so correctly inflated tyres protect against pinch flats and give you better range. Brakes: Squeeze each lever — they should feel firm, not spongy, and the pads shouldn’t be worn down to the metal. Chain: If it looks dry, grimy or squeaks, it needs a clean and a fresh drop of lube.

Keep the drivetrain clean and lubed

The chain, cassette and chainring do the hard work of turning your pedalling into motion — and on a mid-drive e-bike, the motor’s power runs through that chain too. Wipe the chain with a dry rag every week or two, and after wet or sandy rides (hello, coastal commutes). Once it’s clean, apply a quality bike-specific lube, then wipe off the excess so it doesn’t attract grit. Avoid blasting your e-bike with a high-pressure hose — water forced into the motor, battery contacts or bearings is the one thing that can cause real damage. A bucket, sponge and gentle trickle is all you need.

Look after the battery

The battery is the priciest part of any electric bike, so a little care goes a long way. Store it somewhere cool and dry — not in a hot car or in direct Sydney summer sun. Try to keep the charge between roughly 20% and 80% for everyday use rather than constantly draining it flat, and use the charger that came with your bike. If you’re storing the bike for a few weeks, leave the battery around half-charged. Treated well, a modern lithium battery will happily last hundreds of charge cycles.

When to book a service

Do the basics yourself, but leave the technical bits to the pros. Once or twice a year — or if you notice odd noises, gear-shifting trouble, or a motor that doesn’t feel right — bring it in for a proper service. That’s where brakes get bled, spokes get trued, firmware gets updated and the motor gets a health check. For anything beyond a wipe and a pump, our workshop has you covered with expert e-bike repair in Sydney. Keep up the weekly ABC check at home and you’ll spend far less time (and money) in the workshop.
