The Bay Run is a flat, paved 7 km loop around Iron Cove, and riding the Bay Run by e-bike takes about 20 minutes at a relaxed pace. It is one of the easiest and most scenic rides in Sydney’s Inner West, and it starts just a short pedal from our shop in Leichhardt — so you can be rolling beside the water within minutes of leaving Parramatta Road.
What is the Bay Run and how long is it?
The Bay Run is a continuous 7 km shared path that circles Iron Cove, linking Rozelle, Lilyfield, Callan Park, Drummoyne and Five Dock along the water’s edge (Destination NSW). It is almost entirely flat and sealed, which is exactly why it suits first-timers, families and anyone easing back into riding. Most of the loop has a dual path with the pedestrian lane closer to the water, and locals tend to ride it anticlockwise so the cove stays on your left.
The path is managed jointly by Inner West Council and the City of Canada Bay, and it was widened and upgraded for bike-friendly riding in recent years (Bicycle Network). On an e-bike the full circuit is roughly a 20-minute spin — or a lazy hour once you factor in coffee, a swim spot and a few photo stops.
How do I get to the Bay Run from Leichhardt?
From Cyberbikes at 281 Parramatta Road, Leichhardt, the Iron Cove foreshore is a short ride north through Rozelle — you will hit the water near King George Park and can join the loop there. The Bay Run also connects to the GreenWay, so you can chain the two: our guide to riding the GreenWay by e-bike covers the 6 km path that links Iron Cove to the Cooks River. What are the rules on the Bay Run shared path?
The Bay Run is a shared path, so the golden rule is simple: keep left, use your bell before you pass, and ease right off around walkers, kids and dogs. Where the path splits, the lane nearer the water is for pedestrians — stay in the cycle side. It gets genuinely busy on warm weekends, so an early-morning lap is the calmest ride. Helmets are mandatory in NSW, and a legal e-bike’s motor assistance cuts out at 25 km/h, which is a comfortable, sociable speed on a path this popular (Transport for NSW).
Which e-bike is best for the Bay Run?
Because the loop is flat and family-friendly, comfort matters more than raw power. Our Centauro is a step-through, full-suspension commuter built for exactly this kind of ride: a 48V 25Ah (1200Wh) Samsung battery for easily lapping Iron Cove and then some, a rear rack rated to 50 kg for a picnic or coffee run, and a 250W motor that meets Australia’s EN 15194 e-bike standard with assistance to 25 km/h. If you are not sure yet, rent-to-own lets you ride the route before you buy.
